The Site (November 2012)
On Friday 25th of July the building permit was granted for our project S-HOUSE in Tsukuba. Today on Sunday 27th of July the construction contract was signed. We are now looking forward to the works to start on site at the end of August. But in the meantime the site needs to be cleared as it has become a wilderness in the meantime.

今日は色んな話ができていい一日でした。明日もたくさん興味のある人々が会えるようにと思います。

さて、今日も三茶のご報告です。
すでにペンキが塗り終わり（ブルーがとても鮮やかで、いいアクセントになっています）、ガラスも入り、そして照明もつきました。
あっという間に、引越し作業です。
このような広さのプロジェクトは、作業が進み出すと、すべてがとても早い。どんどん、進んでいく。大きいプロジェクトは、それはそれで感慨深いし、達成感もありますが、これはこれで、とても面白い。建物ができていく縮図を見るかのようです。
そんな、こちらのショップは、「DESK LABO」。オープンは4月8日の予定です。サイトも下記にご紹介しますので、是非、遊びに行ってみてください（コーヒー好きなら、隣のコーヒーショップも一緒に覗くことをおすすめします。でも、手間ひまかけてドリップしてくれるので、時間の余裕があるときに！）。

現在、３つのプロジェクトが進行しています。一つは埼玉の動物病院、もう一つはつくばの平屋、そして三軒茶屋のショップの改装です。
中でも急ピッチで仕事が進んでいるのが、三茶のインポート文房具ショップ。
2月末からスタートし、4月頭にはオープンーーものすごいスピードです。
現在、外壁が進み、じきに内装も塗装が始まります。
雰囲気のあるレトロな木造建築で、隣には有名なコーヒーショップが。駅からのアクセスもよく、三茶近辺に遊びに行かれる方は、ぜひともお立ち寄りください。詳細はまた改めて。
Winner of the WAN Civic Buildings Award, completed category: Nebuta House (Nebuta-no-ie Warasse), Aomori City, Japan
Nebuta House (Nebuta-no-ie Warasse), a museum and centre for creative culture in Japan wins the completed category of this year’s WAN Civic Buildings Award.
The WAN Civic Buildings Award, completed category has this year been awarded to molo, d&dt Arch and Frank la Rivière Architects Inc. for Nebuta House (Nebuta-no-ie Warasse). Nebuta House is a museum and centre for creative culture in the Northern Japanese city of Aomori and is inspired by the craftsmanship and spirit of the Nebuta Festival.
The Civic Buildings Award celebrates and promotes the best in international architecture for public use, attracting entries from all over the world. Fittingly the panel of judges was a highly experienced group who understand the complexities and opportunities in this sector. The jury included Lady Patricia Ann Hopkins – Co Founder of Hopkins Architects, Miles Delap – Partner at Gardiner & Theobald, Keith Williams – Founder of Keith Williams Architects, Morten Schmidt – Co-Founder of schmidt hammer lassen and Ralph Johnson – Design Principal at Perkins & Will.
An exciting shortlist included Sunset Chapel in Acapulco, Mexico. This chapel is the first religious commission for Bunker Arquitectura and is a chapel which appears as a magnificent rock that blends with its surrounding nature. Sunset Chapel was considered such a strong entry that it was awarded ‘Highly Commended’. Another very strong contender was Norihiko Dan
and Associates for their impressive tourism bureau on Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County, Taiwan. It was from this exceptional shortlist Nebuta House (Nebuta-no-ie Warasse) in Northern Japan was crowned the deserved winner.
Judges’ comments
A number of incredibly strong entries had the judges struggling to come to a shortlist. On reaching this shortlist they agreed that the civic submissions on the final list all offer hope and spirited design that encapsulate the very meaning of the term ‘public space’.
This notion of civic function was intrinsic to the jury’s decision process, with the majority of projects catching the eye of our jurors for their balance of strong architectural design and commitment to civic function. Keith Williams, Founding Partner of Keith Williams Architects was particularly taken with Larraz Arquitectos’ Shelter Home for the Homeless in Pamplona, which easily made the shortlist, commenting: “Many homeless people are untied over a social embarrassment about where they are, so a place like this where you are not under display would be quite a good thing.”
A number of schemes were praised for their easy integration into the surrounding landscape; JDS’s Holmenkollen Ski Jump was singled out for this purpose, alongside Bunker Arquitectura’s Sunset Chapel, both prominent figures in their communities yet sympathetic to the surrounding flora and fauna.
Selecting the winner in the completed category was harder still, but Nebuta House (Nebuta-no-ie Warasse), Aomori City, Japan was the most highly admired amongst the judges. Miles Delap, Partner at Gardiner & Theobald was particularly taken with the building: “It has the complexity that’s important in a civic building. It blends very nicely the community uses, the community art form which is obviously really interesting. The community art form is visually exciting and the building doesn’t compete with that but it has a really beautiful and lovely façade and depth to it that you don’t often see.”
Morten Schmidt, Co-Founder, schmidt hammer lassen, added that it was “a very modern building and very poetic”. He continued that “the project brings social energy and art and blends them together. A historical and traditional art form brought into a modern frame but done in a very elegant way”
Ralph Johnson, Principal and Design Director at Perkins+Will, Chicago also commented that Nebuta was “an interstitial space that transforms a black box function to create connections back to the city, with a façade of undulating individual shaped steel ribbons symbolizing the myth and tradition of this local festival.” Ending with saying that Nebuta is a “strong form which reinforces a specific regional-cultural tradition and becomes a year round civic amenity”

The February 2011 (no 945) issue featured Nebuta-no-ie Warasse in a two page article. In the same period we collaborated with Nikkei Architecture and Hewlett-Packard on an article published in the March 2011 (no 947) issue. For about two we were asked to test run the large size HP Designjet T2300 eMFP printer-scanner-plotter. The fact that this printer can handle A0 size drawings, that it is also a scanner and its reasonable price-quality ration makes it an attractive machine, provided one has the space. We had to clear our living romm to do the test.
SPACE is a series published by Beisistudio Pace Publishers in Hong Kong. Previously Y-HOUSE was selected for the HOME issue and this time N-HOUSE was included in RESIDENCE together with a wide veriety of residential interiors.
On 28th official inspections by the officials of the city took place.

The music rehearsal spaces. This large spaces will have movable separation wall in order to be able to split the hall into three smaller ones. A large sliding door allows for a connection to the Nebuta hall in the eventuality of events in which a combined use is required.

The Nebuta will access the Nebuta hall through these large sliding door. They are at this moment being finished.

The removal of the scafolding made today the first day that the ribbon screen was visible on the full North side and partly on the East side after the installation had progressed smoothly. I reality a first glimps of how the building will look like eventually. The color is reminiscent of redish colors used in traditional Japanese architecture and may well evoke references to Japanese laquer ware. Difficult to purvey in photographs is that it’s true nature is that it is not exacly a red, or a brown or an ocer, but it has aaspect of all these color. The aim was that under different lighting conditions the color would show differently. By times more red, by times more orange or brownish.
For each ribbon the angle at the bottom is determined, while the top part is parralel to the building, but inbetween these fixed points the ribbons are bend without preset parameters. This means that the steelwokers will have to judge from the available drawings and the images of the model the extend of the bending. They have been doing their utmost to stay close to the images of the model interpreting, what is in the model strips of paper, into strips of steel (9 mm thick and 12 meter high, width of 300 mm) at a completely different scale. The scale factor is very important with regard to constructability and greatly dertermines in this case how much pre-forming is possible. But as can be seen in the images is that the end result is like “paper thin” sculpural strip that create a facade that is both open and closed, both solid and immaterial. The experience changes with movement and location, opening and closes views, shielding and revealing, raising curiosity with regard to the contents of this building.

The two Neputa in this image are through out the year on view in Neputa no Yakata. The are the tallest and stand a hugh 22 meters. They are so tall that they are quite visible from a long distance as the buildings in Goshogawara are not so tall. We had an impressive view of four of these giants from the high way encircling the city.

The installation progress is smooth and instead of the initially planned 10 ribbons a day roughly 20 ribbons are presently installed per day.

A partial inspection of the steel ribbon facade screen was conducted at the factory of Kikukawa. At the factory a whole hall is reserved for the production of the facade screen. Here the bending and the welding of the brackets takes place. Hereafter the ribbons are shipped to a factory in Kawasaki for blasting and coating, after which they are send to Aomori by trailer. The transport of the 12 m long ribbons takes place on large size trucks. On site with a pace of 10 ribbons a day the installation takes place. The handeling of these 12 m long and 9 mm tick pre-bend ribbons is not easy. On site they are lifted in place one by one, but first they have to be brought into an upright position without damage.

The test set-up conducted on site in February showed a relatively straightforward area, today a more complex area was inspected. A part of the entrance area, there where the ribbons are bend to the side to create a passage. Because of the complexity of the form in this area, it was not possible to make the ribbons form one steel plate, instead two steel plates were welded together after bending. In all the impression is that the result will be close to the design intend.
The opening date for Warasse has been set and announced. Retail & Leisure Category Winner – Nebuta-no-ie Warasse, Aomori City, Japan, designed by molo Japan kk & d/dt Arch Inc and Frank la Rivière Architects Inc for City of Aomori. The Nebuta House is designed to exhibit Nebuta art (huge paper creatures, warriors and demons) during the annual August festival. A screen of twelve meter tall steel ribbons encloses an outdoor walkway, intended as a threshold between the mythical world inside and the contemporary city outside. The judges felt that Nebuta House was a joyful and elegant response to the whole idea of display, with the restraint of the frozen wrap of the architecture a perfect foil to the exuberance of the Nebuta figures inside.
The Awards will be presented during a special celebratory dinner held in Cannes on 17 March 2010 during the MIPIM market, an event that has become one of the hot ticket evenings of the MIPIM week. There will also be a permanent exhibition of all entrants on display on the London Stand, and all winning and commended schemes will be published in the official catalogue which is distributed to all registered MIPIM delegates.
